Pine Lodge Inn History
Pine Lodge Inn has been a landmark in the heart of Port Sydney since 1927. It was in 1927 that Elizabeth Clarke decided to settle in Port Sydney and build a Lodge to take summer guests. Originally, the Lodge was a 4 bedroom bungalow that was expanded and winterized in 1932. The expansion in 1932 included a dining room and lounge, kitchen and 3 additional guest rooms.
In the following years Elizabeth added cabins to property and capacity of the Lodge grew to 50 guests. The winter guests where primarily summer guests that wanted to experience the Muskoka winters. Elizabeth ran the Lodge until 1946 when her youngest son Bill and his wife took over. In 1995 the Lodge was enlarged again and bathrooms were added to each unit. In 1961, a wing was added to the east side of the Lodge adding 5 additional guest rooms.
In the early 60s the advent of snowmobiling brought changes to both the Lodge and local community. In 1965 there were 5000 snowmobiles in Ontario and that same year, a local Port Sydney snowmobile club was formed. Very soon, the winter guests outnumbered the summer and the Lodge was expanded once again in 1965.
Bill and Lilla Clarke sold the Lodge in 1980 and two years later, Charlie and Jean Carter purchased the Lodge. The Carter's ran the Lodge for 29 years and during that time, Pine Lodge Inn became one of the most popular destinations for Snowmobilers in the Muskoka region.
